Each property we work on has their own unique style, character and, perhaps most importantly, measurements. This is why we have always taken a bespoke approach on our projects, carefully ensuring that the staircase accurately matches your homes dimensions and your own needs and tastes. This tailored approach was especially important for a recent refurbishment.
The homeowners were converting an existing annex office into a games room with additional sleeping accommodation. They needed a spiral staircase to provide access to an upper floor area whilst maximising space in the ground floor area. Originally, an off-the-shelf kit staircase was ordered on recommendation of the builders but the results didn’t come up to standard as owner, Gill Jones, explained:
“The original kit spiral staircase was a disaster and not fit for purpose. It had been extremely difficult to fit, was very wobbly after installation and the handrail could be described as a piece of plastic drainpipe! Being guided to an off-the-shelf product in order to save time was a bad decision and the result was not saving time but indeed set the project back time-wise.”
Having made the decision to replace this staircase with a bespoke alternative, project architects – Fowler Architecture & Planning – recommended the homeowners get in touch with us. The family wanted a solid spiral staircase that would also be a design feature within the room. We worked with them to develop a classic design featuring our Modern Art Deco style treads and landing plates. These have a linear cut out which add distinction and character to the staircase. These were paired with simple round profile spindles and a metal handrail.
We developed 3D CAD plans for the staircase based on measurements provided by the project team and once these were approved, began work on manufacturing the staircase. As with all our aluminium pieces, the staircase was cast and fettled by the expert team at our specialist Staffordshire foundry before moving to our workshop for finishing and the test build. As a final step, we added a black powder coating to the staircase for a perfectly smooth finish.
The result is a simple but stylish staircase which adds additional character to the refurbished space whilst allowing the homeowners to make the most of the renewed space.
