Accurate design has been the bedrock of our production process since day one. When we started out this was all done by hand but over time, we have moved over to computer aided design (CAD). Last month we welcomed a new member to our team – Katie Lees – who is helping us to take the step into a new dimension – 3D CAD!
We sat down with Katie to find out a bit more about her and the advantages of 3D CAD
Hi Katie, can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am 23 years old, grew up in Bramhall but moved to Dubai with my family in 2011 to follow my father’s work commitments. We were there for 4 years and I therefore spent a lot of my education there. It was a great experience but I’m glad to be back home now. Outside of work my main hobbies are cooking and socialise with my friends – I do love a nice meal with a couple of drinks!
How did you first become interested in computer design?
Design is something I’ve always had an interest in and was my favourite subject at school. I later went on to study product design engineering at Liverpool John Moors University. My favourite module was designing a product that helped people with different disabilities. I also enjoyed learning the different computer software, which I now use now to create 3D drawings for British Spirals & Castings.
How have you found your first weeks at BS&C – have there been any challenging or particularly satisfying aspects?
My first weeks have been great, I have learnt so much more about CAD in a short space of time and I still learn something new every day.
What are the benefits does 3D design offer?
3D CAD makes it a lot easier for the customer to envision how the staircase design will look in their property. This makes it much simpler for them to request changes in the design before we begin the manufacturing process. At present, we supply customers with pdfs showing the model from different angles and in the future we hope to be able to export the model into a 3D viewer, allowing customers to rotate and zoom in on the model on their computer.
Finally, have you got your snowshoes ready for the winter weather in Chapel-en-le-Frith?
I have just passed my driving test so more concerned about me driving the car than the winter shoes! Surely it can’t be that bad, right?!
Thanks to Katie and Ben in our design team, you can receive accurate plans of your staircase whether you’re ordering in Manchester or Marrakech. Take a look at our gallery and submit a quote and we’ll begin crafting your perfect staircase, balcony or railing.
