Victorian Elegance Reaches Modern Heights

With planning permission granted for a roof terrace but with no roof access, Ashley Williams was looking for an elegant spiral staircase that would serve as a beautiful centrepiece in their home. An additional consideration was that the staircase had to fit in the courtyard they had available, which was rather limited. This search led them to British Spirals & Castings.

Needing a product that was lightweight and traditionally styled, Ashley opted for a Victorian style aluminium spiral staircase which complemented the industrial character of their home, and its bespoke design ensured it would fit the awkward space perfectly. From there, they requested a quote and discussed their needs with our design team.

Upon receiving Ashley’s initial brief, we set to work, utilising CAD technology to craft detailed designs for the project. With all of our staircases, we begin by forming CAD designs outlining the style and dimensions of the structure to ensure any changes can be made before the staircase is manufactured. Standing at 3.26 meters, the impressive cast aluminium staircase features 12 Victorian-style spiral treads, with each tread featuring an ornamental infill panel and spindle to form the balustrade.

Given the relatively small size of the courtyard, it seemed impossible to fit or align the staircase with the terrace floor above without moving its base, which wasn’t possible. The team came up with a clever idea: adding two straight steps at the top of the staircase, after the landing plate, to ensure a seamless transition. Once this design was finalised, the parts were cast at our foundry and assembled in our workshop before the staircase received a black finish at our powder coating facility. Despite the constraints, the final product met Ashley’s expectations.
