A new build in Somerset was in need of a stylish, straight staircase that granted access from the ground floor to the first. Aligning with both the home’s newness and the rustic aesthetic of the countryside location, the homeowner dreamed of a traditional staircase with a modern twist. After searching through designs that were out of their budget, they reached out to British Spirals & Castings.
Having known the company for years, from our history in the Derbyshire community, the homeowner was sure of our reputation in the industry and the quality of our work:
“We had great service from Ben and the team. It was a lovely experience dealing with a long-established, family ran company,” said the homeowner. The process began with a face-to-face meeting in our showroom, to discuss their plans and ideas, as well as looking at some samples, “Ben also arranged for us to see two staircases that had been installed by British Spirals & Castings.”
Wanting a design that effortlessly combined contemporary and classic aesthetics, the homeowners opted for a timber handrail, produced by a local joiner, to be added to the steel balustrade of the staircase. Our steel balustrade options can be made as minimalist or elaborate as requested, and in this case the homeowner loved the simplicity of the slimline, plain steel balustrade contrasting with a slightly wider, smooth and rounded handrail.

The homeowner explained, “We didn’t feel drawn to the steel staircases with a chunky spine underneath; instead, we wanted wider treads that looked very solid, with a shadow gap around the edge. We chose a handrail that curves elegantly, with no harsh angles.” To keep the design seamless, we also supplied oak caps to cover bolts and where the steel spindles met the landing floor.
The large window featured halfway up the stairs meant light could still stream though to the ground floor between the treads, and the tone of the timber was further complimented by the golden evening light. The homeowner’s addition of downlights, featured on four of the treads, makes the landing glow even after the sun goes down.

As with many of our stainless-steel products, all aspects of the design can be tailored. Straight stairs can be made completely bespoke with a wide range of spindles, tread widths, and thicknesses to choose from, with both steel and timber risers available.
Like many of our projects, the installation went ahead without a site visit. The project was measured up by the builder and sent over to our design team. During the design and manufacturing process, Ben liaised with the builder in charge of the installation to ensure it was as seamless as possible. We then developed detailed 3D CAD plans for the staircase that ensured an accurate design.

Of the finished look, the homeowner commented they were “delighted with the result”.
